Classroom research : Methodology, categories and coding
Open Coding is generally the initial stage of Qualitative Data Analysis. After completing the Open Coding, depending on the methodology we use, we can do Axial Coding and Selective Coding. At later stage of the research, these coding help us to build theories in an inductive process (i.e. Grounded Theory). Open For example, one could choose a more inductive, grounded theory–oriented coding method to generate a number of initial codes in the first cycle of coding and then could apply a more deductive, theoretically structured approach to coding those labels into categories, then categories into themes in the second cycle. There are two basic ways to create coding systems for content analysis.

In many cases your coding scheme is not perfect at the beginning. Some behaviors may be too detailed and others may be missing.

This paper, thus, focuses on the central decisions that need to be made when engaging in qualitative data coding in order to help researchers new to qualitative research engage in thorough coding Research outline Auerbach & Silverstein (2003, p.44) recommend that you keep a copy of your research concern, theoretical framework, central research question, goals of the study, and other major issues on one page in front of you to keep you focused and allay your anxieties because the page focuses your coding decisions. It is also helpful to develop matrices to depict your data. • A matrix is a rectangular array formed into rows and columns. • Patton’s typology of teacher roles shown above is an example of a matrix. Henri's (1992) work was pioneering and her scheme has been used in many research projects, either directly or as a basis for further developed coding schemes. It is based upon a cognitivist approach to learning, which recognises cooperative learning, collective knowledge and interactivity.
